Mass Audubon's Cuttyhunk and Elizabeth Island Tours
Sundays:
Join us for a day-long excursion to Cuttyhunk Island, off the southern coast of Massachusetts. The cruise will depart from Woods Hole and will take us through Vineyard Sound and along the Elizabeth Islands. Experienced Mass Audubon naturalists will provide commentary focusing on landmarks, geology, wildlife, and the history of the quiet, protected islands. Along the way, we'll look for endangered Roseate Terns and other species of seabirds and waterfowl.
We'll spend four hours on Cuttyhunk enjoying the quaint village, harbor, and scenic views from the top of Lookout Hill, 150 feet above sea level. We will spend time exploring the islands habitats for migratory songbirds and watching from Lookout Hill for passing raptors, on their journey southward for the winter. Participants will have a choice of a short, medium or long guided walk. The long hike has more of a focus on birds and natural history while the shorter hikes focus on island history and landmarks. During the long hike, we will pass by land owned by Mass Audubon. All hikes go to Lookout Hill. Afterwards, you will have time to visit a gift shop, take a swim, or explore the beaches.

Mass Audubon's Island Tour: Cuttyhunk Island Sundays: August 8, 29 and Sept 12
Hike the natural preserves of tiny Penikese Island, known as "the sleeping land out in the water," by the native Wampanoags.
Our one of a kind Penikese Island tours give you an opportunity to learn about the islands wonderful history. The 75-acre island once served as New England's only leper colony, and is now home to the Penikese Island School and Penikese Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary harbors Leach's Storm Petrel and tern colonies and is the site for the endangered American Burying release program.
Leaders: Ian Ives Sanctuary Director, Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, John Galluzzo, Historian/Naturalist, South Shore Wildlife Sanctuaries, and Robert Buchsbaum, Mass Audubon Scientist and marine specialist.
